Details

Situated on a 6-acre rural property just outside the historic town of Ashland, Virginia, the Autumn Sun Community is in the process of developing a master plan for an intentional inter-generational community. This community is centered around permaculture principles, community gardening, and practical green-building practices for constructing small, sustainable homes. The community property features a single-family home, a large shared house, a log cabin studio, a small business office, and a 6,000-square-foot warehouse, all operated on 90% renewable energy. The master plan includes the development of a 5,000-square-foot co-housing space and a large greenhouse. The community is tiny house friendly and also welcomes occasional campers. Autumn Sun Community prides itself on being an open and accepting environment where individuals can enjoy art, music, exercise, and outdoor living. Common areas such as the community kitchen, garden, workshop, and outdoor fire ring serve as frequent gathering spots for enjoyable interactions and conversations. Community members respect each other’s privacy, with ample spaces available for quiet contemplation and personal reflection. As a new community, it encompasses a varied mix of employment. Individual and household income is managed by each family, with potential revenue-sharing opportunities for community projects. Decisions within the community are made through processes described as Sociocratic and Modified Consensus. Currently, a work trade option is available in exchange for all or part of community members' contributions towards their shared living space. The Autumn Sun Community is composed of entrepreneurial-minded individuals who encourage knowledge-sharing and group instruction. Community member revenue can be generated through participation in collaborative workshops and community projects, as well as individual use of the large workshop equipped with shared workspace and tools. The same collaborative spirit will apply to the shared use of the large greenhouse once construction is complete.
