Baltimore Free Farm

Baltimore Maryland, United States

Details

Baltimore Free Farm is dedicated to creating ecologically sound alternatives by merging the best technologies of modern practices with age-old traditions. The farm aims to promote urban agriculture, sustainability, and permaculture through the establishment of green spaces and community sanctuaries that utilize reclaimed materials whenever feasible. By offering entertainment, educational opportunities, and ethically produced food to local residents, the farm hopes to foster a sense of pride in the community and its capacity for self-sustainability. Baltimore Free Farm is an egalitarian collective of gardeners and activists committed to ensuring access to healthy food for all. Horizontal Housing Co. is a non-stock corporation formed by members of Baltimore Free Farm in 2013. Because Baltimore Free Farm operates under the umbrella of the 501(c)(3) organization Fusion Partnerships, it is unable to collectively purchase property. The primary purpose of Horizontal Housing Co. is to acquire property for use by Baltimore Free Farm members as either gardening space or housing. In 2012, a valued friend and member of Baltimore Free Farm, Paul Pojman, passed away, leaving behind a house that collective members lived in but did not own. Collaborating with Paul’s family and NASCO, an organization that assists co-ops and housing collectives in property purchases, Horizontal Housing successfully acquired this property, allowing several BFF members to continue living on campus. Additionally, Horizontal Housing secured two lots from the city, which are part of Baltimore Free Farm’s gardening area. Like much of Hampden, these lots were at risk of housing development before Horizontal Housing was granted the rights to purchase the land, ensuring that it will remain part of their garden for many years to come.
